Having met in Washington D.C., Ashley and Boris, without any question, knew their engagement session would be in our nation’s capital. With Mike B Photography capturing it all, the newly engaged pair went to different locations that reflected their interests and personalities as they roamed through the heart of DC. We also love the Groom’s adorable Annapolis wedding proposal story leading up to their DC engagement photos and just had to share!

I am a typical guy. A “bro” you might say. Like most guys I’m not very keen on planning and I’m still trying to make sense of this whole “feelings” thing. However, proposing to a very worthy girl is not to be taken lightly. I arranged a clandestine meeting with Ashley’s Dad to ask for his permission and get some additional pointers on Ashley and marriage in general. I then spent about 7 weeks getting the diamond. Once procured, the ring went into a sock drawer because that’s where all grown-ups keep their important things. Now onto the final step: The actual proposal.

{A quick but important Author’s aside here to paint the mood: They say that your mind is like a muscle; through training you can build both its strength and endurance. At age 30 I came to realize that one’s ability to plan things follows the same paradigm. My planning muscle is weak as a kitten. So by the time step 3 (planning the actual proposal) rolled around, I was spent.}

“I had the foresight to discuss with some married folks their best practices and advice for proposing. They advised that I have other people with me to take pictures, pop champagne, celebrate with afterwards, et cetera. Armed with this advice, I planned three different proposal scenarios in which I would propose to Ashley. The first one was rebuffed, so onto plan B. Plan B was shot down with a vengeance…. Next up, Plan C: a friend’s boat. Timing and distance were an issue and our trip to “see Shane’s boat in Annapolis” kept getting postponed. Finally, in early September, a breakthrough. My poor little planning muscle was on life support at this point but it received one last dose of smelling salts and sprung to action.
I brought a few of my friends as the support crew, and we ventured to Annapolis. The ring was in my backpack along with all our other valuables. Note to the audience that after Ashley repeatedly chastised me for not putting the backpack inside the boat “where our stuff would be safe” my planning muscle quit in protest. In his absence, Captain Clumsy took over and conducted a Mickey Mouse operation. All in all, the idea was to lure Ashley to the front of the boat, have a friend put her favorite song on the music player, pull the ring out of my backpack, and propose. I went down to the boat’s cabin to discuss the actual game plan with Shane. Unfortunately, while Shane and I could barely hear each other over the music, our moronic yelling was projecting up to the rest of the crew like an opera singer’s voice in an amphitheater. Ashley, and apparently half of Annapolis, had caught on to my plan. Oh well, all is well that ends well and she said yes!”
