Are you thinking about a honeymoon after your wedding in the Washington DC area, but not sure where to go or when to go? There are so many options when the world is your oyster! Destinations aside, the one thing that we heard from most newlyweds who were DC, Maryland and Virignia is the importance of taking a honeymoon, even if it is just mini-moon. (What’s a mini-moon? It is a quick trip or an overnight in a nearby location!) They all stressed the importance of taking a honeymoon to get away from the stress of wedding planning and celebrating. Planning a wedding is exhausting and followed by your wedding celebration where you are surrounded by loads of friends and loved ones. A honeymoon is something nice to look forward to and is a chance to get away, just the two of you and to kick off your married life together. We talked to a few of our recent featured couples who were married here in the Washington DC area about where they went on their honeymoon. Maybe this will inspire your travel bug and give you some good ideas of where to go on your honeymoon after your wedding in the DMV.

South Carolina

We were pretty consumed with planning our wedding in Virginia, so we knew we wouldn’t have time to plan an elaborate honeymoon. The Monday after our wedding, we slipped away to Hilton Head, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia to indulge in southern hospitality and the laid-back culture. It was nice to have the quiet time to reflect on the wedding and make plans for our future. As it turns out, we were pretty tired from all the running around and DIY projects we did leading up to the wedding, so some rest and realization was exactly what we needed. To continue the celebration, we took a more elaborate honeymoon to France a few months later.

St. Thomas

Yes, we went the Monday after our wedding in Washington DC to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. We were going to wait and do our honeymoon at a later date since it seemed too overwhelming to plan that on top of the wedding, but we’re so glad we did it. I let my husband take control of making the plans for the honeymoon and it was perfect. I’m so happy we stayed on Sunday after our wedding on Saturday to visit with out-of-town family and friends, and then it was such a great trip reminiscing about the wedding day and starting our married lives together. When wedding planning got stressful, it was great to have a week of relaxation to look forward to!

Dominican Republic

We did go on a honeymoon! We left the Monday after our wedding in Maryland for Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We loved it! (And, it’s a direct flight from BWI airport!)

New Zealand

We are spending two weeks in the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

Yes, we went on a honeymoon after our wedding in Arlington. We went to New Zealand!

We went to Hawaii! We loved it! We doubled the honeymoon with visiting our good friends from college who were actually from Hawaii and moved back after college. Since we missed our first dance that would have been at our wedding reception, we danced on the beach in Hawaii to our favorite song and our friends recorded it, so we could share it with our family. Our wedding was complete!

We went to Honolulu, HI to visit our long time friends. It was an amazing adventure every day!

Puerto Rico

We did go on a honeymoon! We went to the W Resort in Vieques, Puerto Rico and absolutely loved it!

Jamaica + Cruise

The weekend after our wedding we went on a long weekend trip to Jamaica. Three months after our wedding in Maryland, we went to New Orleans and left from there on a cruise to Mexico, Honduras, and Belize.

Yes, we went on a honeymoon! We went to Ireland to see some Penn State football and then the French Riviera to melt on the beach!

We went on a two week road trip across Europe and visited the wine countries in Northern Italy, the South of France, and Spain. It was not so relaxing, but super adventurous and we got to see a lot, which was the goal since it was our first time in Europe. Now, we are sure of the places we will want to re-visit!

Yes, we went on a honeymoon! We went to Greece and Paris. Neither of us had never been to the Greek Islands, so we splurged on a beautiful hotel in Santorini. It was very romantic and quiet – the perfect way to rest and recharge from our wedding in Virginia! Then, we headed over to Paris, France where I lived for a study abroad program for five months. I was able to take my new husband to all my favorite places, and it was so wonderful to relive the beautiful city of lights with him. Our honeymoon was perfect, because it felt like two vacations in one!

St. Lucia

We spent our honeymoon on gorgeous St. Lucia!

We went to Cambodia in the fall after our wedding. We wanted to go somewhere relaxing and beautiful, but also somewhere where we could see something amazing. We’ve also done a lot of traveling, so we wanted to go somewhere neither of us have been. We started with the site-seeing aspect – staying in Siem Reap and going to Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Then we went to an amazing floating eco-lodge, the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge in Tatai. We finished our trip on the beach in Sihanoukville, located off the Gulf of Thailand.

Yes, we went on a honeymoon after our wedding! We spent four nights in Napa Valley, California and nine nights in Kauai, Hawaii.

Our honeymoon trip will be in a year after our wedding. We are going to the Maldives to the underwater hotel room and then to Thailand and Japan.

After our wedding in Maryland, we went on a cruise to Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman Islands, and Cozumel in Mexico.
