From butter cream and fondant to cake flavors and fillings, there is a ton to know when it comes to your Washington DC area wedding day confections. To ensure you get the cake (or desserts!) of your dreams, it’s important to know the must-ask questions before your consultation with your baker. But where do you begin? Today we have Meghan from Kendall’s Cakes here to share some pro advice for what you need to know for your meeting! Take it away, Meghan…
Before the Meeting
- Do a little research on your baker. Find out what their signature style is and if it fits with your vision.
- Be open minded with your design. Sometimes your baker will be able to suggest a design that you would never even have dreamed of on your own.
- Take inspiration with you to your tasting: photos of your flowers, cakes you like, your invitation, or your dress. You’d be surprised all of the different things we can turn into a cake design!
May I See a Portfolio of Your Work?
Even if you have a photo in mind it’s always nice to see what their style is. This lets you see other things they’ve done and gives you a few other options you might not have considered.
How Far in Advance Do You Need the Final Guest Count?
This ensures that your baker will have the right amount of cake for the event!
Can We Go Over the Contract?
Just be sure to really double check the details. We’re all human so sometimes we make mistakes, too. Make sure all the elements of the decorations are what you’ve agreed upon. For example, if you were talking about sugar flowers and changed your mind to fresh flowers, be sure the right one is written down. When we go to make the cake, we go off of what is written in the contract.
How Can I Get the Most Value?
In order to have the best cake, you have to use the best ingredients, and the best ingredients can be pricey. Even though one cake may be less expensive than another, it might also be less delicious. It’s all about what is more important to you!
