Welcome back to another installment in our DIY dessert recipe series! Today, we’re sharing DIY treats to let guests at your wedding in the nation’s capital region take a bite out of all three states – DC, MD and VA – with these DMV themed sugar cookies. Pack these cute little treats into a wedding welcome box or send away your guests with a locally-festive edible party favor! And, wedding treats aside, you will love this recipe for sugar cookies – they turn out perfectly soft and are perfect for cut-out cookies! Our girl Hannah Colclazier Photography took some super cute photos AND you can find these DMV cookie cutters at our very own Hill’s Kitchen.

To Make:

In a mixing bowl, mix together butter and sugar until smooth. Once mixed, beat in eggs, vanilla, almond extract and vanilla. Next, incorporate flour, baking powder and salt—make sure to add it in slowly so you don’t create a flour cloud in your kitchen! Transfer dough to a flour surface, split in half, cover and chill dough (If dough is still sticky before covering, add in extra flour!) for at least an hour or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. On a floured surface, roll out dough to a ½ inch thickness. (The thinner to dough, the crispier the cookie, but I like mine soft, so I keep it thick!) Cut into shapes with desired cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake in oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges are browned. Once removed from over, let them cool completely as they will continue to bake on the hot cookie sheet after it comes out of the oven.
