When it comes to Washington DC area wedding, we love them all—big or small! But, there is something extra special about having a guest list of your closest friends and family. Melissa and Gordon continued their intimate wedding at Osprey Point Inn with a celebration filled with DIY details, including the floral centerpieces, table décor and stationery captured by Drew Bird Photography. (Don’t forget to go back and check out their waterfront wedding ceremony that we featured this morning.) I’ll let Melissa tell you more about the inspiration behind their big day…

From Melissa: The whole day felt like a great big hug. We both have so many fun, poignant and warm memories – simply summed up as incredible feelings of love and support from the people who mean so much to us. And laughter, lots of laughter.

One unique detail was the appetizer we served. It’s not just little girls who dream of their wedding days. Gordon always wanted one thing at his wedding: sausage balls. The chef at Osprey Point adapted the recipe of Gordon’s late grandmother. We framed her typed recipe and note she wrote to Gordon’s parents that described having the sausage balls at a bon voyage party. She described the appetizers as “really good and hard to quit.” The frame is now hanging up in our kitchen.

Capitalize on what you already own and borrow what you can! We owned or borrowed vases, linens, jars, candles and other items to decorate the venue. We also love to go to thrift stores and estate sales, where we found a lot of treasures for the wedding. We have many of those items around the house, so those are nice reminders of the wonderful weekend we spent with our family and friends.

Melissa’s wedding planning advice for other DC area couples: Get married where you want to get married, when you want to get married, how you want to get married and make it all about your commitment to each other – not what other people expect. We were discouraged at first because so many venues in this area are out of our budget. But we decided what was important to us and weeded out the frills to have a wedding that celebrated our love and life together.
