We love all things DC-area (duh!) around here, so we, of course, had to include a little local love for our DIY dessert series photographed by Hannah Colclazier Photography. Our inspiration? State flowers! We’re going to show you how to create these local blooms with a little gum paste and a little handiwork to wow your guests. You can use these sugar pretties on cupcakes, cakes, and even cookies! First up is the American dogwood – the state flower of Virginia! How cute would these be for a bridal shower in Virginia?!
Gum Paste Dogwood Flowers Ingredients:
Remove gum paste from packaging, knead and roll out to 1/16” thick. Use dogwood shape cutter on gum paste and tear away excess.
Gently lay impression mat over cutout and press firmly.
Next, take the cutout (imprint side up!) and, using the ball tool, gently cup each round side of each petal. With the veining tool, create a small fold between the two round edges of each petal – creating a small peak. Take ball tool and make an indentation in the center of the flower.
Rest flower in a flower forming cup – found in most craft supply stores! – or on, a piece of foam.
Let the flower dry for a few hours before coloring!
Mix desired food coloring shade in a small cup with a little bit of vodka or water.
Use a clean painting brush to color the edge of each flower.
A big, big thank you to Hannah Colclazier Photography for taking such pretty pictures! Where will you be using your gum paste flowers?? Don’t forget to check out all of our other wedding DIY desserts! Can you tell we have a sweet tooth!?
