For any couple looking at various cake options, you must ultimately make sure that the cake tastes good. No matter how beautiful the cake looks or how well-executed it is, if it doesn’t taste exquisite, it won’t leave the kind of impression that you want. No matter how large the cake is, it should never be dry!  For me, the cake is fundamentally food. I offer a menu of composed flavor profiles that include Vietnamese Cinnamon and Chocolate Cake with Hazelnut Praliné & Cappuccino Buttercream and Pear Cake with Blackberry & White Chocolate Buttercream.  Delicious!

Know the Policy

Each cake designer has a different way of working.  Knowing their individual policy in advance will make the whole process much smoother. Ask the designer detailed questions about what you should be prepared to discuss during the consultation, when the contract is signed, how the tasting happens, and how many people can attend the tasting.

Time and Audience

Most of my client tastings and consultations are about an hour, and we’ll enjoy the cake first before discussing specifics about design. Some cake designers limit the tasting to only the couple and others are more flexible.  Choosing who attends the tasting is important and you should only bring those who will give the most constructive input. Too many opinions can make much more difficult.

Cake Flavors

While there’s nothing wrong with a classic white cake, I love to play with more sophisticated flavors. Salted caramel is one of my current favorites!  It can be difficult for a couple to agree on just one flavor and most of my clients choose to have two or three flavors represented for their guests.  That way, there’s no need to reach consensus!

Know Your Budget

Every cake designer has a price range.  Having a clear budget for the cake will make the selection process much less stressful and ensure that you find the very best fit for both your vision and your pocketbook.  Many cake designers offer supplemental sheet cake at a lower price point. This is a great option if you’re open to having a smaller-scale decorated cake.

The cake is woven into the fabric of wedding tradition.  It is a more than just a focal point.  It is also a deeply symbolic way for the couple to literally share their love for one another with the people who have gathered to celebrate— one slice at a time!
