April and John carried the pops of yellow right on through to their reception (Did you see the ceremony, captured by Kristen Gardner Photography, yet?), with bright yellow centerpieces and even a few cocktails. They also incorporated a fun non-tradition, replacing a wedding cake with milkshakes (on the dance floor) and baked treats made by family members. Their wedding was truly all about incorporating family, from beginning to end!
From April: After the ceremony, we stole away, just John and I and the photographers to take a few more shots. It was so nice to have some time just the two of us following the excitement (and a few nerves) of the ceremony, plus the pictures are great, they are some of my favorites from the entire day! We were so excited and couldn’t stop smiling.
Family is very important to both of us, so we wanted to include family members as much as possible. At the escort card table, we had pictures of family members from their weddings, including our siblings, parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. Instead of a traditional cake, we had milkshakes on the dance floor and had family bake cookies for a cookie/dessert table.
Our table numbers highlighted places that John and I have traveled together.
One of my favorite moments was at the reception, we were dancing outside on the portico at the Rosemont, it was lit by Moroccan lanterns and candlelight and everyone was having a great time. I remember taking a step back and thinking how happy and lucky I was to be so happy that each and every person there was there.
April’s advice to other DC-area couples:
The one thing that I would suggest to other brides is to pick a venue where you can choose your own vendors, or they have options. Having more competition is really helpful to getting the experience you want.
