Abbey and Nick’s receptions is one of those that I really wish I could have attended myself! (Did you see their wedding ceremony from Red Shoes Photography?) It was full of whimsy, like those paper pinwheels, and humor, a favor inspired by a Seinfeld episode and even the tables had a fun theme, carnival rides! They made sure each and every detail reflected their relationship and weren’t afraid to cut out traditional wedding elements that didn’t. Gotta love a fearless. fun-loving couple!
From Abbey: For our reception, we basically just wanted a big party, so we passed on some of the traditional elements (e.g., we skipped the cake cutting) and Nick’s brother, Bryan, generously gifted us his awesome DJ-ing services to create an excellent atmosphere (Awesome old-time jazz for dinner followed by a great mix of fun oldies/80s hits/indie favorites/pop for dancing)! Lastly, Abbey’s mom hand-made all the awesome paper flower decorations, which not only provided very festive decor, but were also a hit with the guests!
Hands down, my favorite detail was the paper flowers that my mom hand-made to decorate the space — they added great color and whimsy.
We were very fond of our pez dispenser favors (an ode to Seinfeld’s “Pez Dispenser” episode, which leaves us in stitches!).
Another favorite memory was dancing to “Home” by Edward Sharpe together toward the end of the evening — everyone just made a huge circle around us while we danced our hearts out — it was such a high energy moment.
Abbey and Nick’s advice to other DC-area couples:
Most importantly, have a wedding that represents you as a couple. The wedding should be about your relationship; anything that’s not true to the relationship should be nixed from the plans.
