Here on the blog, I’ve seen tons of gorgeous DC-area weddings and have ultimately decided one thing: it’s the little details that truly make a wedding charming! One thing that I’m madly in love with is hand lettered paper goods— it is more than just pretty writing, it’s an art! If you’re looking for a way to add charm and an extra dash of pretty to your wedding day paper pretties, calligraphy is the way to go. And if you don’t know where to begin, we have local wedding calligrapher Arney, of Arney Walker Calligraphy, here to give us the basics of the calligraphy process! Take it away, Arney…

Calligraphy vs. Other Printing Styles

While hand calligraphy is more expensive than printed envelope addressing, we feel like it’s worth it! Your invitation is the first impression that you are giving your guests for your wedding and having it hand written adds an extra special touch. Many of my clients tell me that they receive calls from their guests after getting their invitation in the mail saying that the envelope was so beautiful they were going to save it!

Stationery + More

I can do menus, buffet labels, table card numbers, Quaker Marriage Certificates, the lyrics to your first dance, poems or vows, the possibilities are endless!

Choosing a Calligrapher

As soon as you start the process looking for your invitations, you should also look for a calligrapher and book a calligrapher. When it comes to booking a calligrapher, the first thing is you should ask is how much extra paper they might need. Since everything is done by hand and with ink, you must allow for mistakes.

Wedding Calligraphy Basics

You should also ask your calligrapher the best way to format the guest list to avoid any questions on the addresses and how they should be written. You should also ask your calligraphers the typical turn around time. For most projects, mine is about two weeks, but if you have a particularly small job (a few escort cards) or a rather large job (350 envelopes or more) it may take more or less time.
