You hear the term “one-of-a-kind” thrown around a lot in wedding-talk, but I couldn’t think of a better term to describe Jillian and Chad’s mismatched DIY Virginia wedding. Aaron Watson Photography captured every quirk of this day perfectly, from the handmade floral bridesmaid dresses and bridal sash to the DIY doily programs and the most hilarious ring bearer and flower “dog” duo! Sourcing many wedding items from their home and homes of friends made every little detail meaningful. And you know how much we love that! Don’t miss their reception, too!

Floral Bridesmaid Dresses

From Jillian: I wanted bright colors and floral touches, nothing too matchy!  I looked through a lot of wedding blogs and photographers’ blogs for inspiration and saved images I liked into a folder with categories.  I did the same thing with wedding magazines.  That way when I needed to show people my vision it was all together.  A lot of inspiration also came from our home décor and scouring thrift and antique shops.  Half of our décor and props came out of our house or from friends’ houses. Etsy was also a life-saver!

One of my co-workers really stepped up to the plate and made my wedding sash (out of scraps of fabric she had at her house!) and my hair piece.  My mom and I made my birdcage veil and she also made my garter.  I have always been a nostalgic person, so all these things meant a lot to me.

Chad and I did a “first-look” shoot before the ceremony and we were so glad we did!  It was so special to have that time alone because the rest of the evening is a whirl-wind!

Chad’s stepmom put together all the boutonnieres and bouquets.  Mine even had flowers from our garden.  We had family pick a lot of wild flowers and also bought some from local farms. Our ring bearer, Quan, was paid $10 by Chad to skip down the aisle…that was hilarious!
