We are switching thing up a bit today and giving you another real DC area wedding this week! Sharon and Peter were married at a unique location in Alexandria and we couldn’t help ourselves in sharing their love story.

Taking long distance relationships to a whole new level, Sharon and Peter met in the late 1990s while working on the elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Peter being from Denmark and Sharon from the U.S. meant lots of phone calls, Skype chats and visits until the time and place was finally right, thirteen years later, for them to tie the knot! They chose an intimate ceremony and reception with Lisa Boggs there to capture it all.  They celebrated their long-awaited Virginia wedding in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, and we’re glad they didn’t have to wait a second longer to say “I do!”

From Sharon: Peter is Danish, and “hygge” (coziness) is a big part of Danish culture. So we tried to incorporate that into our wedding by having an intimate, cozy wedding that was elegant but comfortable.

We also had a Danish favor. Georg Jensen is a Danish luxury brand, and we had a Georg Jensen heart shaped “ornament” as a favor.

My favorite memory was the toasts. I was a little nervous about what might be said but they were touching, sincere, and humorous.

Sharon’s advice to other DC-area couples:

When looking for venues or vendors, ask for referrals from people in the business. For example, I contacted the Hotel Monaco in Washington DC because it was a venue I was considering. Because our wedding was small, they couldn’t accommodate us, but they did suggest a couple of other places that would better suit our needs, and we wound up using one of the places they suggested. I don’t think we would have found it without that referral. Likewise, our photographer recommended our DJ to us, and he was fabulous.
