You already know that we’re a bit gaga for literary theme weddings over here, and this beautiful Washington DC wedding from The Observatory is no exception.  Jennie and Pat were married at Georgetown University’s Dahlgren Chapel with the reception at the nearby Riggs Library.  I love all the library details – and the men all look so dapper in their tuxedos!  But my favorite part?  The pure joy on Jennie and Pat’s faces throughout the entire day.  Those smiles just say it all.

From Jennie: Our focus was on elegance, character, and a lack of fuss: we hoped our guests would find our wedding simply a wonderful way to spend an evening.  Our reception location, in a historical library, was gorgeous, cozy, and unique.

I firmly believe a bride doesn’t have to spend a ton of money to look good on the day of her wedding.  I was lucky enough to find my wedding dress on Once Wed for $60 (yes! SIXTY DOLLARS!), and even with $200 of tailoring, this was a great bargain.  I borrowed a veil and necklace.  Saving on my attire meant we could put money into other priorities.

As my heritage is English, we served Pimm’s Cups at the reception, and my speech to guests referenced the royal wedding two weeks before.  The song for our first dance was “The Lady From St. Paul” (which I am!).  And with our reception in a library, we had images of books on our cupcakes, and the favors for guests were notebooks with a reference to “writing a new chapter.”

Literally 6 days before the wedding, we had just a couple of rather unimpressive dance moves to try to stretch into our first dance, a swingy, big-band number.  We despairingly considered abandoning the whole idea but with a lot of help from YouTube, we managed to fill the two-plus minutes of the song and practiced it as often as we could over the next few days, and then just held our breaths at the wedding, and it turned out pretty darned well!

We allocated the bulk of our wedding budget to the food, drinks, and the photographer.  Food and drinks were the priority because we knew that’s where our guests would get their enjoyment, and the photos were really important to us because we always want to be able to look back and smile at the wonderful event we put together!
