Happy Monday everyone!  We’re starting the week off with a gorgeous spring Washington, DC wedding from Katie Stoops Photography.  Ashley and Kevin had an absolutely picture perfect day, from the Catholic ceremony at Georgetown University’s Dahlgren Chapel to the elegant reception at the Carnegie Institution for Science.  Ashley was inspired by her love of Washington, DC, so she definitely wanted the classic elegance of our beloved home city reflected on her wedding day.

From Ashley: Our wedding was city inspired elegant. We wanted to reflet our love for cities, specifically Washington, DC and the elegance that the city portrays.

Our floral designer, Michael from Devers Design, was very practical.  I told him my budget and some ideas that I had and he made it happen.  Flowers were lower on my priority list but he made them look fantastic even on the smaller budget I gave him!

Our “first look” coming around the corner at the Lincoln Memorial was one of my favorite memories from our wedding day.

Our wedding priority was: Location. Location. Location!  Our wedding ceremony was held at the Dahlgren Chapel on the Georgetown University campus.  Photography was also very important to me.  We splurged on the invitations and stationery.

I was very specific in what I wanted for invitations and stationery.  Tifany from Gourmet Invitations created a custom invitation that had the DC skyline and our personal monogram on EVERYTHING.  From the invitation, to the programs, to the menu and table cards… everything flowed.  We even had a cigar bar with our initials wrapped around as a cigar band.

Ashley and Kevin’s reception might have one of my favorite wedding details of all time – the entire bridal party was introduced wearing political masks!  So fun!

One of my favorite details from the wedding was how our wedding stationery flowed from invitation, to place card, to menu, to the Cigar Bar, even to the logo light above the door at the Carnegie Institution.  Every detail was synchronous and flowed.

Lighting was not something we had originally thought of in our wedding planning process.  The lighting of the venue was something that took a back seat in my mind.  However, after talking with our photographer and caterer who had also worked at Carnegie Institution for Science, they convinced us that this was important…AND IT WAS!  The pictures came out better and the “A&K” we had lit up on the wall for the reception was a hit.

Ashley was kind enough to share some advice for other brides and grooms in the Washington DC area:

Decide on a location first.  We really wanted something that reflected DC.  We specifically did NOT look at hotels so that we could find a venue that oozed DC – the Carnegie Institution for Science was perfect for us.  Also, we used the Georgetown University Jazz Band for our cocktail hour and they were great for background music and for a little classier selection.  The students are very talented, they were punctual, and dressed in suits or tuxedos.  They were very good and, although I haven’t checked this, probably less expensive than most Jazz quartets.
